Review by Matthew Medina (book club member)

I enjoyed this book club pick more than most of the others. It started a little slowly and for a couple of chapters, I wasn't sure if the humor was going to work - it seemed largely missing. But then I started laughing and it worked. It's a very similar style to Carl Hiaasen and likely inspired by him, but still enjoyable. Perhaps a bit more manic - Serge, the main star of the series is a very manic character and loosely based on an aspect of Mr. Dorsey's personality. A serial killer who kills the deserving and aspires to be a good member of society. I think the ongoing joke of the flooded Subaru was one of the best jokes I have read. I felt like Mr. Dorsey did a lot of research about obscure Florida history and statistics for this book, which he inserted in an attempt to appear intelligent. It did not feel like he was making a coherent, intelligent satirical point, just putting together ideas about the declining world with statistics to appear smart. Apart from that, he built an entertaining, funny world and engaging characters that make me want to read more while Carl Hiaasen can leave me overwhelmed and doesn't carry characters over from book to book very often.
